8 ACTIONABLE Tips to Help Your Dog Lose Weight

56 percent of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese.

According to the latest pet obesity survey, more than half of our nation’s dogs are overweight.

Excess weight is unhealthy for dogs. It can lead to diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease.

So how can we slim down our super-sized guy? The answer may be easier than you think.

Causes and Culprits

Before we give weight loss advice, you first need to know why your dog is getting fat.

There are many possible reasons, from diet to physical exercise to whether or not he's neutered. Let's take a close look at an overview of the common causes for dog obesity:

  • Overfeeding
The weight management and prevention of obesity in dogs comes down to diet. Calorie-dense dry foods and commercial pet treats are usually the prime culprits.

Worth noting, keeping the bowl full every meal could lead to overeating. Go with smaller portions and more frequent meals.

  • Neutering or Spaying
Neutering or spaying is a risk factor for weight gain in both males and females.

This is linked to the influence of sex hormones on appetite and exercise. The changes in hormones result in a slower metabolism while increasing their appetite post surgery.

  • Lack of Exercise
Daily exercise is equally important for dogs. Dogs lack of exercise require fewer calories than active dogs.

  • Age
As dogs get older, they're less active than young pups. If you continue to feed them the same amount of food as usual, they tend to become overweight.

  • Sex
Female dogs are more likely to gain weight than male dogs, and spayed females appear more prone to be obese.

8 ACTIONABLE Weight Loss Tips for Dogs

Dogs rely on us for food and activity, so we are completely in control of helping them achieve a good and healthy weight.

Here are a few things that can help you trim excess pounds from your dogs and keep them trim.

#1 Know your dog's ideal body weight

Ask your vet — then you'll get a general idea of what you should feed him and how much you should feed him every day.

#2 Calculate your dog's daily calorie intake

Don’t worry — calorie counting for dogs is much easier than for humans. The standard steps used by vets to calculate a dog’s caloric needs are as follows:

  • Divide a dog’s ideal body weight in pounds by 2.2 to convert to kilograms (kg)
  • Daily calorie intake: 70 x (Ideal Body Weight in kg)^0.75

For example, a 10kg (22lb) adult dog's daily calorie needs: 70 (10 kg)^0.75 ≈ 400 Calories/day.

Of course, each dog’s metabolism varies from each other, so it's best to consult your vet before starting a diet.

#3 Measure and control the food portions

After you calculate how many calories your dog needs for a day, determine and measure how much food you should feed each meal.

A pet parent’s single greatest tool to fight against overweight is a smart feeder. It gives you the easy and precise way to manage your pet’s feeding routine.

Most pet owners simply fill up the food bowl or “guesstimate” how much they eat. But you know what, “just leave a full bowl” feeding method means an “all-day buffet” meal for some pooches.

#4 Set a feeding schedule

Some studies have revealed that one large meal per day (even controlled for calories) can increase the risk of excess weight.

Feeding smaller, more frequent meals burns more calories. So feed your dog at least two meals per day can help pets lose weight.

#5 Reward with cuddles, not calories

Many dog owners feed the right food amounts but they just fight a losing battle. Why?

Because they add one or two snacks throughout the day. Dogs consuming as few as 30 extra calories per day can result in over three pounds of weight gain in a year.

So, whatever treats you give, be sure to count those extra calories.

#6 Recheck weight after two weeks on the diet

Ideally your dog will be losing between 0.5 to 2 percent of his starting body weight per week, or about 2 to 8 percent per month.

At first, you may see a rapid weight loss in your dog because of the reduction of water weight. So... if you see your dog is lost more than 2 percent per week early on, there's no need to adjust.

#7 Adjust calories intake accordingly

Keep an eye on your dog's weight loss, and increase or decrease his calorie intake as needed to make sure you're hitting the target rate.

If you have to decrease his intake, and he seems like he's still starving, try adding a little water or even very low-calorie veggies to his food.

#8 Increase Exercise

While exercise is essential, keep in mind that restricted diet is a main way to shed most of the calories in any weight loss plan.

Proper exercise still needs to be integrated throughout the weight loss program, as it helps your dog keep healthy for the long term.

Walking is the best exercise for most dogs because it has low impact on their cardiovascular system and joints. It's physically, mentally, and emotionally beneficial for both you and your dogs.
