How to Clean Your Pet Fountain
You may have invested a pet water fountain for your beloved furry friends to maintain optimum hydration.
Though the pet water fountain has a filtration system, hair and dust particles can clog the fountain over time which will slow down the water’s circulation process and thus creates a conducive environment for bacteria growth.
So, it still requires regular cleaning. Proper cleaning and maintenance can keep bacteria at bay and ensure a fountain’s effectiveness and longevity.
In this article, we are going to show you some tips on how to clean and maintain your pet fountain.
How to Clean and Care for the Water Fountain
For the sake of your pet's health and the longevity of the device, regular cleaning is essential. It's highly suggested to clean the fountain once a week. And here's how.
#1 Unplug it from the electric outlet
Before you start cleaning the fountain, it's important to unplug it first from the electric outlet.
#2 Disassemble the fountain and clean it
Remove the top bowl of the device. Empty the contents. Just use wipes and clean water directly to clean the top bowl and the reservoir. You don't need to add cleansers.
It's worth noting that the top bowl only is dishwasher-safe, you can put it in your dishwasher, preferably on the top rack. NEVER PLACE THE PUMP OR RESERVOIR IN THE DISHWASHER!
#3 Replace the carbon filter every three months
Remove the filter and clean it thoroughly using clean water. Never use soap to wash or clean the filter.
It is suggested that the carbon filter should be replaced every three months. However, when using the pet fountain for multiple pets or pets that produce a lot of saliva, the frequency of filter replacement may actually increase.
#4 Scrub and rinse the exposed surfaces
Make sure to scrub and rinse all of the exposed surfaces of the different components with clean water.
Once in a while, you can put a little vinegar in a bowl of hot water and let it soak for a bit. Then rinse very thoroughly.
#5 Once the parts are clean, reassemble the device
Once everything is completely cleaned, you can start assembling the device.
Last but not least, be sure to follow the manual which can help you with the disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly.
As a responsible pet parent, you need to keep a close eye on your pet’s eating and drinking habits. If they are messy eaters and drinkers, chances are that they leave saliva or debris on the fountain. This will require thorough cleaning regularly to stop bacteria from growing.
