How Long Can You Leave a Dog Home Alone?

Dogs see us as the center of their universe, but sometimes it’s just not possible to take them anywhere we go.

Going to work, running errands, or heading out for a day trips, means that you will have to leave your dog home alone.

That can be challenging! You may wonder whether it’s acceptable to leave your dog home alone for that long stretches. And what happens when your dog is left alone?

How Long Can You Leave a Dog Home Alone?

The answer is, it depends. How long your dog can stay home alone depends on their age, health, and their physical needs.

Age

Time Limits

Reason

Tiny puppies

(8-10 weeks)

1 hour a day or less

They simply can’t hold their bladder.

Puppies

(2-3 months)

2 hours a day

Their bladder capacity is growing, but they still pee more and need to be taken out.

Puppies

(4-6 months)

4 hours a day or more

They can usually hold urine for 4 hours. It could be longer depending on their development.

Adult dogs

(over 18 months)

6 hours a day

They are used to being home alone, and have the ability to hold their bladder for up to six hours.

Elderly dog

2-6 hours a day

It depends on their health.

Of course, the above is based on a general rule of thumb. It can vary on your dog’s training, health, and habits.

If you don’t know how they will react when leaving them alone for 8 hours or more, they can result in separation anxiety, lots of stress, and even bad behaviors.

This can happen when your dog is home alone too long:

  • Endless howling, barking and whining
  • Feeling bored and anxious
  • Starting to wreak havoc on your house (scratching, biting, chewing on furniture, etc.)
  • Urinating and defecating everywhere
  • Binge eating
  • Running away
  • Self-mutilation

Leaving a dog alone for a long period of time can have negative effects on them. And if you have no way of knowing this, they could eventually develop separation anxiety and other serious problems.

How to Keep Your Dog Safe and Happy When Home Alone

There are a few things you can do if you need to leave your dog home alone while you’re at work.

#1 Train your dog to be alone

Teach your dog that being home alone is absolutely OK and that you will eventually return.

Grab your keys, put your shoes on, and go to the exit. Spend a few minutes outside and once your dog becomes quiet, come back in. Gradually increase the time you spend outside before coming in.

Repeat this action at least 3 times every day. Your dog will start to get used to it and will feel less anxiety when you are leaving.

#2 Walk your dog before you leave

Often, dogs become destructive out of boredom or due to the pent up energy.

One of the best ways to prevent the destructive behavior is to take them on a long walk or run before you go to work.

The physical activity will give your dog a chance to burn energy. So after some exercise, they’ll be better able to relax and have a long nap when you are gone.

#3 Create a comfortable environment for them

Before you leave home, create a comfortable environment for your dog.

Leave enough water and food for them. And make sure the thermostat is set to a comfortable temperature, especially in hot summers and cold winters.

Also, make a cozy dog bed for them. Your dog may like to have a towel that smells like you. That will give him or she some comfort when you're not at home.

#4 Provide interactive toys for your dog

Interactive dog toys can help to distract your dog, reduce boredom, and keep them entertained during your absence.

Some toys have a container that allows you to fill with treats. Your dog will be kept busy to play with it, so he or she will have less chance to get into trouble while you’re at work.

#5 Hire a trusty pet sitter or dog walker

When you’re going out of town for a few weeks, hiring a pet sitter or a dog walker is a good option.

They have rich experience and offer a wide range of services. They will take your dog out for exercise on schedule and increase interaction to keep your dog from becoming bored and anxiety.

Also, a pet sitter can inform you if there’s any issue or emergency. If you can't afford a pet sitter or dog walker, it’s a good ideal to find a friend or a reliable neighbor to check on your dog.

Smart treat dispenser with camera.

The app is user friendly and it comes with a lot of features. I was able to set it up in about 5 minutes which is pretty good for something that has an app interface. There is a night vision mode that automatically turns on to increase visibility when it becomes dark.

My cat loves it!

It turns out it's perfect for her size (she's a pretty small kitty). All I need to do is putting her favorite treats in the bin on top of the machine and press the treat button on the app, and a few treats will be popped out and up for her to enjoy.

Fun to use!

My dog loves it! The set up was pretty straightforward. I do not have any problem with the app, easy to use. The camera works perfectly. There are four suction cups on the button which helps to secure the box. Mounting holes are also provided in the back.
